Hello everybody!
Looking through the parallax site today and saw this:

http://www.parallax.com/Store/Sensors/ObjectDetection/tabid/176/CategoryID/51/List/0/SortField/0/catpageindex/2/Level/a/ProductID/874/Default.aspx

Of course, with it being christmas time I can't afford to test one out just now, but this might be a good replacement for a PIR. Or you might be able to look "magical" with gestures that control lights, or what-have-you.

Scaring someone with a prop you built -- priceless!

I think that device is intended for very short distances, but I'll check. The other trick is that it required I2C for use; this is not possible on a Prop-1.

I have to agree with Jon on this, but it will work with the Prop-2 and maybe even HC-8 since they can handle IC2 protocol. Now the distance that they are talking about is about one feet and it works similar to the no-touch sensors found in restrooms which use IR to detect you.
