Does the new surface mount output chip need additional protection from fly back voltages on solenoids, vs the DIP version? I had two Prop-1's stop functioning after operating a pair of relays, but after switching to an older DIP Prop-1, had no issues. Do I need to add flyback diodes to anything with the new revision?

I don't think it would hart. The ULN datasheet shows Output clamp diodes. It would just provide extra protection for what you trying to do.

As William points out, it's the same chip, just a different package. JB is on a personal trip this week; when he's available I will consult with him.
