I dont like the current sound setup on my prop and I am thinking of switching to an ap8 but I need to know how loud they are. the prop will be in a noisy envirnment pluss the sound of the box itself jumping around.

There are two settings on the board.  With the setting to 1 you can pretty much compare it to the normal talking voice you and I might have in a conversation.  But if you put that to setting 2 you get a very load sound.  I think the documentation says it is a 20x amplification.  I use setting 1 with amplified computer speakers and setting 2 with non-applified speakers.

There is no quantifiable answer; you'll have to determine suitability in place.  Let me suggest that you try it with an enclosed, 8-ohm speaker that has a six-inch cone.  If that doesn't work, then you can run the output through an amp.  I have a friend who uses AP-8s in her [noisy] haunt and none of them require amplifiers, but then, she's using big speakers (that are properly enclosed).

I wrote a rather lengthy document in regards to using speakers with a high efficiency with low powered amps such as what the AP-8 has.

Here it is:

In a nutshell, you should look for the largest musicial instrument speaker that you can find that has a high SPL or 'sensitivity' specification.   You want to get this figure as close to 100db as you can.  That said you would more likely be looking at a 10" to 15" speaker.

If you don't want to build the speaker yourself, then I should suggest looking for old guitar speaker cabinets and OLD organ speaker cabinets (modern organs use modern amps and as such inefficient speakers.  Back in the 30's through 50's many amps were tube based and were low power as well, so it was important to use efficient speakers).

Anyway, check out my post...there is a lot of good speaker info there.
