Lightning with LEDs?

I'm considering putting together a version of this project for Halloween this year:

I was thinking it might be fun to use some of the new, very bright LEDs for the lightning, instead of using regular light bulbs.  The other advantage is that you might be able to do this without using AC current to power the lights.  It might be easier to hide the LEDs in various places, and have several of them to do a "chain lightning" effect along with certain sound tracks.

Is this practical?  Will rechargeable batteries make it through an evening running LEDs?

It's hard to say -- you'll have to experiment.  Rechargeable batteries don't have as much energy capacity as any of us would like but then, LEDs don't waste much energy in the form of heat so it just might work.

Something you might want to consider is the flash units from disposable cameras. But be careful with those, you can get a nasty shock!

Scaring someone with a prop you built -- priceless!

I'm always amazed at some of the suggestions that come from this group!  I never would have though of using those, but knowing they're so cheap and compact, I gotta give 'em a try.  ;D I could experiment a little with them, but if you have any hints that could jumpstart their use, that would be great.

I can't remark for quality or reliability, but these guys seems to have some nice deals on their ebay store for bulk high intensity LEDs.

I ordered some bulk UV LEDs from them today to see if I can replace some of my aging florescent blacklights.
