Howdy Jon:

Will the Crydom CXE380D4 be able to handle an A/C motor?  I would like to drive some inflatable fans.

Thanks...

Without knowing the current draw or horsepower of your blower motor, it will be hard to answer yes or no.

I would not go past 1/3 the crydom's rating ( or 1.33 amp maximum).  A small motor AC 1/5 HP (80% efficient) will draw 1.55A running.  AC motors can have very high starting currents for relatively long times-up to 30 seconds.  Starting currents can be up to 800% of their run current if they are starting with a load.

Depending upon the duty cycle and current draw of the motor, you may be replacing the modules due to burnup.

I recommend you contact Crydom and ask them if that model of relay is rated for your motor.

I would absolutely follow the guidance suggested by Menehune as I get the feeling that these small Crydom relays are intended for incandescent loads.

Thanks Menehune.

I should be been more specific in my first post.  I could not find this particular part @ Crydom.  I was hoping that Jon had a spec sheet.

You reply is very helpful.  It gives me the information I need to dig around and become more familiar with my blower motors.

We acquired these as part of a special buy for the CalHauntS Convergence that was then canceled (probably due to the timing/location of TransWorld).  All relays have been tested by us, so you shouldn't have problems with them if you don't over-stress them.

The D4 series is rated for 4 amps, and has been replaced by Crydom with the D5 series (5 amps).

Like you, I've not been able to locate a spec sheet for this part.

I assumed the D4 was replaced with the D5 and most of the specs should be the same, but was also unable to find the D4 spec sheet on Crydom's site.  They may be able to send it to you if you contact them.

I have emailed Crydom support asking for a data sheet.  If I get anything I'll share with the group.

I received a very quick response from Crydom.  Here is a copy:

QuoteHi Walter, I do not show this to be a valid part number but a CXE380D5 is a good number. Below is a link to the spec sheet.

That was pretty much what I was finding.  The D5 is well within what I should be doing.  I'm still safe at 4 amps.  So I will go for it.
