I placed an 8 ohm 5 watt resistor across the speaker output terminals and a 10K ohm in series with the + side of the input to the guitar amp.  The results are good.  Lots of volume and no distortion.  And no blue smoke.

You are better off with a preamp connected to a PA amp, which is able to handle the 8 ohm inputs. Or, if want you can use a PA amp only, if it has the 8 ohm inputs on it, which saves you the use of a preamp.

I am glad that the current setup is working for you.
